Kehlsteinhaus / The Eagle's Nest / Hitler / WW2

September 16, 2012.

On that day I visited the Kehlsteinhaus,
or The Eagle`s Nest, as the Americans call it.
Also read a lot about, and seen it in documentaries,
but I was never there before.
There are two ways to get on top of the mountain.
By bus, in that case you can stay at The Eagle`s Nest
for the maximum time of two hours.
(This, of course, to avoid large crowds of people.)
And otherwise on foot.

Because I wasn`t alone, and therefore not the only one to decide on that,
(I was in the minority), we decided to go by bus.

Well, as long as we could get on top of that mountain,
and could reach The Eagle`s Nest, it seemed fine to me.

Although I honestly have to say, that now I am back home,
I`m extremely frustrated.
In hindsight, I had rather climbed that mountain on foot.
You do not have to be an accomplished mountaineer,
there are very nice trails.

If you want to, on top you can scramble over rocks,
and there you really do need safety lines,
heavy duty fixed eye double-locking safety hooks and that sort of stuff.
Not that I know anything about that, off course.

Photo Impression

1.  This was the final destination for that day :

2.  Kehlsteinhaus /  The Eagle `s Nest, as seen from below from Berchtesgaden.
Perched at 1.834 m. (6.017 ft.)
(Zoomed in, because with the naked eye you can hardly see) :

 3.  Our bus that day, numero uno :

 4.  Bus trip to the top :

5. I have a very vague suspicion that we are being followed :

6.  End of bus trip. Further on foot.
At the bottom of the photo you can see the entrance of the tunnel,
at the top you can see The Eagle`s Nest :

7.  Entrance tunnel, towards the elevator :

8. Tunnel  =  124 m. :

9.  The elevator ; another 124 meters, but this time straight up.
(In the elevator itself, it is forbidden to film or to photograph) :

10.  Well, where is that oh so famous Eagle`s Nest ? :

11.  Oh, there you are ... , but still no eagle in sight :

12.   Nice view though :

13.  Grüß Gott :

14.  The Eagle `s Nest was supposedly in the name of the NSDAP
given to Adolf Hitler for his 50th birthday.
Yeah, right...
In reality, Mr. and Mrs. Taxpayer have funded The Eagle`s Nest.
And that, while the ordinary citizen a long time knew
nothing of the existence of The Eagle's Nest.

15.  Overlooking the Königssee (lake), and the Watzmann (mountain)
(Photo unfortunately taken against the sun) :

 16.   Did you know that Hitler visited The Eagle`s Nest probably
no more than 5 to 13 times ?.

 17.  According to insiders, Hitler suffered from dizziness,
attacks of migraine and altitude sickness.
The latter seems rather odd, given the height of just 1.834 meters.

18.  Much more likely is that those symptoms were caused by
his fear of heights, and his claustrophobia.

19.  He was also afraid while being in the elevator, he would be struck by lightning.

20.  Nowadays, it would cost about 140 - 150 million Euro
to build The Eagle`s Nest.

21.  Eva Braun, Martin Bormann and Hermann Göring
were here more often present.

22.  Martin Bormann (married, 11 children, 1 of whom died shortly after birth),
didn`t take marital faithfulness all too seriously.
It is believed that he has taken several mistresses along to The Eagle`s Nest.
And not just only to enjoy the panoramic view.

23.  The red Italian marble fireplace that Mussolini gave to Hitler :

24.  Inside the fireplace :

25.  Okay, one more time enjoying the view :

26.  Last look at The Eagle`s Nest :

27.  You seem in the farthest distance not even on an eagle !
Strange bird dressed in black feathers costume :

28.   And we find ourselves again 124 metres lower.
Fortunately there is always light at the end of the tunnel :

29.  And back in the bus :

30.  Hopefully auf wiedersehen beautiful view :

31.  We descend further down to the point where we began our journey :

32.  Next time I go on foot.
That is for sure.

To get a better impression of the immediate vicinity.

Make the trip yourself to The Eagle`s Nest :

For all technique lovers amongst you, You really should look at this video ;

(A rare view of the U-Boot diesel engine and the emergency generator
at the Eagle's Nest in action) :
